Week 3 Roundup
Someone has taken the standings and turned them upside down. After three weeks, six of the eight division leaders are teams that were at or below .500 last season: the Honolulu Hawaiians, Oakland Invaders, Oklahoma Outlaws, Georgia Force, Washington Federals, and New Jersey Generals/Philadelphia Bell. The Hawaiians are actually in a three-way tie with the Los Angeles Express (also below .500 in 1974) and San Jose SaberCats.- The Federals took a 27-0 lead on Charlotte, then held on to defeat the Hornets, 27-14. Joe Richardson threw TD passes of 74 and 37 yards to WR Joseph Baker.
- The Blitz similarly took a 17-0 lead on the Orlando Renegades before holding on for a 17-15 win. The Renegades moved to the Chicago 38 with 12 seconds remaining, then inexplicibly ran a power sweep on the last play of the game.
- The Denver Gold, in danger of falling to 0-3, came through with a 41-35 overtime win over the Arizona Wranglers.Arizona scored a TD on the first play from scrimmage when WR Steve Cody picked up his own fumble and rambled 75 yards for a TD. The Wranglers led, 35-26, in the fourth quarter before the Gold rallied to tie on Leland Dudley's 74-yard TD reception from Dustin Nichols. Then, with 27 seconds to play in OT, Nichols found Jimmy Rupe for the 66-yard game-winner.
- The Houston Gamblers picked up their first win, edging Los Angeles, 20-18. Houston WR Bradley Sharp caught nine passes for 158 yards and two TDs,
- The Tampa Bay Bandits surprised Detroit, 19-10, limiting the Wheels to 136 net yards. WLB Roy Edelman had seven tackles for Tampa Bay.Wheels QB Henry Prieto has a 57.63 QBR after three games.
- The Oakland Invaders are 3-0 after mauling Pittsburgh, 31-13. Jason Brooks ran for 162 yards and a TD for Oakland and Lee Lacy fired three TD passes, including this clinching 74-yard strike to RB Christopher Curtis midway through the fourth quarter.
